I am a big fan of Rough Guides but was not familiar with their pocket guides. The standard-size Rough Guide to NYC includes the histories of neighborhoods, sometimes on a block by block basis, and points out lots of things that are not tourist "sights" but are very interesting once you know how they got there, and what they mean to the people who live there. However, it was tough to carry, so I broke it apart and carried one neighborhood at a time. For my next trip, I needed a new one, and decided to try the Pocket Guide instead. I found it disappointing. Unlike the stand-size, the pocket guide just lists the tourist highlights. It's easy to follow, with lots of maps (another Rough Guide feature that I love), and useful info like restaurants and entertainment venues included in each neighborhood section, rather than in their own sections at the back of the book. However, it's not much different from any other guidebook. I'm going back to the standard-size.
