UPDATE: This knife is still good, but it inspired me to try some more recently-produced classic Bear models. Nope, this knife is NOT a sign of Bear improving overall. Maybe they had to buy better machinery to make this new model, but their other stuff is still junk. Don't buy any other Bear models based on having read my positive review of this one.Original review of this. . .I rarely buy anything from Bear & Son (formerly Bear MGC, whatever that meant). Sloppy grinding, inconsistent shape, blades mash into the backspring, etc.I bought this one because it's unique. A simple but unusual intersection of both sleek modern and basic early design.I am pleasantly surprised that it seems to be manufactured with more care than other models. The blade is perfectly straight, the edge and main bevel are consistent on both sides, the bevel has a nice angle where it meets the tang, the backspring lines up with the handle in both opened and closed positions, the handle has a nice small bevel all around, and there are no ragged splinters of metal hanging from the liners. The blade surface has a visible brush pattern which I like, but is buffed just enough to make it feel smooth and not cheap. They really did a good job on this. I hope they rearrange their entire production to meet this level of quality. One thing I would change is to make the backspring a little stronger. It's within the acceptable range, but near the low end. It's good for a casual knife, and with its 3.5-inch handle it's obviously not meant as a hefty work knife, so this is fine. This is a very practical knife, well shaped handle, sharp well executed blade. A modern take on a classic design. Makes a great knife for those with weak hands or fingernails, nice easy open notch (it would be nicer to have this on both sides). Non locking design.
