There, he and the cutlers’ union he formed produced the finest steel cutlery, finished with the now-famous proprietary edge preferred globally by professional and home cooks. In 1891, Karl supplied the Swiss Army with its standard issue Soldier’s Knife and in 1897 with the Officer’s Knife. In 1921, after the death of his mother, Victoria, and with the advent of stainless steel, then known as “inoxydable" and used in the production of his cutlery, Karl changed the name of the company to Victorinox. It is from those humble beginnings that a worldwide icon was born.Today, Victorinox is still owned and operated by the Elsener family, and both the company and family still resides in the small village of Ibach, Switzerland. Care Tips for Swiss Army KnivesThe various tools are manufactured from high-quality steel with precisely tuned features that are essential for the particular application. The steel is tempered, annealed and polished to achieve the necessary hardness and provide optimum resistance to corrosion.SharpeningTo re-sharpen your knife, use a whetstone at an angle of 15°– 20°. This will result in a cutting angle of 30°– 40°. If sharpening on a grinding wheel, always cool with plenty of water to avoid excessive temperatures and the resulting damages that may occur.CleaningAfter you’ve used your Swiss Army Knife for all of its various applications, such as cutting open numerous boxes, you may notice that the blades begin to stick together. Opening and closing the blades in warm water several times will allow the tools to easily move again. Once they have dried, it is recommended, to apply a small drop of oil between the blade or tool shank and the spring. To optimally maintain the locking mechanism, periodically apply a drop of our recommended Swiss Army Knife Oil. Never put Swiss Army Knives in the dishwasher. Thus began what would become the international brand name Victorinox, a combination of Victoria, for Elsener's mother, and "inox," or stainless steel. Today, Victorinox produces watches, luggage, clothing, and, famously, Swiss Army Knives. The original product dates to 1897, when Elsener patented the Swiss Officer's and Sports Knife he supplied to the Swiss Army. Following World War II, American servicemen and women shopping in PX stores shortened the name to Swiss Army Knife, which lives on in English-speaking countries around the world and has become a metaphor for versatility.

In my opinion, Victorinox Swiss Army knives are the top of the line, bar none. I personally own this and the non-serrated version. This model is what I carry out in the field. The edge stays sharper, longer because of the serrated pattern. And you'll never have to cut steak with those plastic picnic knives ever again. The selling point for me with Victorinox Knives is the blades. They hold an edge better than any blade on the market, and I keep mine razor sharp, literally. This blade is solid, sturdy, and most importantly, locking. It has no side-to-side or back play in the locking mechanism. The 'humpback' feature gives this blade added strength and thickness as well as just needing your thumb to open it. The best bonus of all is the locking feature on the bottle opener/screwdriver blade. Anyone who has used a similar screwdriver feature without the lock knows just what I mean by skin savings. This is an oversized pocket knife with larger blades and fits nice in the hand. Because I like my knives to have the sharpest edges possible, I have found the Lansky TB-2D2C Diamond-Ceramic Four Rod Turn Box Sharpening System to be the best out there. Amazon sells it at a good price. It is small and portable for backpacking/camping. The rods are pre-angled at 20 and 25 degrees for precise sharpening of different types of blades. I use 20 degrees for this type of blade. Here's a sharpening trick of the trade - Blades "mushroom" as they dull. Lift and remove this mushrooming by first running the knife blade upwards on the rod first before running it down the rod to sharpen it. And always hold the knife straight up and down to the angled rods.Needs to be a plain edge option, jsI have had some type of Swiss Army Knife in my pocket for nearly 25 years. They make excellent products. If it is a genuine Swiss Army Knife product you cannot go wrong with it. This new model features locking mechanisms for the main blade and accessories which is very much appreciated. This multi-tool will stand up to rough use and will never let you down. The only downside to this camo patern is if you drop it in the forest, you might not find it again. I have attached a bright orange lanyard to mine in case I drop it in the woods. It looks cool.Even though it is serrated the main blade is VERY sharp out of box. I have no doubt this could cut through laminated windshield glass or a seatbelt. If you are looking for a modern knife with a locking blade feature, look no further and buy this product. Great for a bug-out-bag or every day carry, this product is highly rated by me. I won't leave home without it.The main blade can be started open, but it would take the finger span of a great ape to fully open and lock the blade. (I wear XXXX gloves and can't do it.) Disappointing as that was the deciding factor in choosing among other models.I have another one of these knives that is my every day carry. The black one. I bought this as a backup. I have many other pocket knives, but they all stay in the drawer. I like the serration in the front of the blade. It is able to rip through plastic bubble packed goods in nothing flat. It is easy to open with one hand with practice. The main blade is non-threatening looking so I don't worry when I bring it out at work. My only wish is that it had the scissors. That would make it perfect.Since I retired, I always carry a red Swiss Army Knife. It cough my eye, this new one handed open blade multi knife. Well, this knife is the very best. It is slightly larger and the serrated blade is scary sharp. My red trusty has been retired, rest in peace, this newSwiss Camo is my new partner!!!sense i was a kid i have had a pocket knife. in fact i had one so long it started to look pretty sad so i bought a new one. this is a nice knife, real compact but big enough for my large hands. i like the fitted grip and the cool cammo color. the down sides, don't like the thumb lock that looks like it was put on backwards and the fact the blade in the photo is strait and yet the one in my pocket is serrated. is that a big deal, not really but just a lil nit pick. so far its doing well and im sure ill find much more use for it in the future.I love this over a traditional Swiss Army knife! Full size contoured frame in a fun, outdoorsy color. I love how this model includes the tweezers and toothpick, unlike some of the other military models. The saw portion is very sharp and works well, but I can see it will probably be a little challenging to sharpen when the time comes. The main blade opens easily with one hand. Overall very satisfied. On me every dayAs important as my walletBeautifulErgonomicLove the colourMy son loves it !
