Got this out of the box and it was one step above a butter knife in sharpness. Spent about 20 minutes on stones and stropping and now it shaves lumber very well! Keeps an edge for a good amount of time, truly hard woods like holy or epee wear it out fast though.Bought to peel logs for a gardening teepee…worked exactly as advertised. This is a must have tool when making walking sticksFirst impressions -As other reviewers have said, edge needs work up before it can/ should be used. Handle finish functional but rough. Will sand and refinish before use. Neither of these bother me as they both when not if todos. Handle relationship to blade plane makes this a bevel up only tool. You can flip it over if you want (?) but you’ll be wrists down to just get an aggressive cut angle. Materials and construction look good for the price. So no issues just heads ups.I've been using an electric plainer for the last 2 months trying to get this job done. Finished in 2 days with this. Sometimes a hand tool is superior and this one is fantastic. As describedBlade grind was very poor and paint covered the backside edge. Obviously they only grind one side. After removing the paint on the back I found pits near the blade edge, the full length. The pits will eventually cause the blade edge to look like a saw! If you don’t mind reworking the blade and removing paint then this might suit your needs. The images provided are "after" i re-honed both sides. For the money I would expect a better grind, no pits and no paint. The tool now performs very well. Investigate all comparable products but if you want a low cost draw knife, this would be a starting point.Well made and durable, could be a little sharper out of the box but overall it works great.
