Fats Waller was a great composer and performer. He was a terrific keyboard player (both piano and organ), an excellent band leader, and an effective vocal stylist. With regard to the latter, it can hardly be said that he had a great voice. But he knew how to use what he had with the music he performed. The tragedy of Waller was that, while possessed of astonishing talent, he never grew up and learned how to manage his life. At his peak he made a lot of money, but blew through it quickly and was often broke. He loved food (there was a reason he was called "Fats") and drink. And he didn't make it to his fortieth birthday. This four CD album has 83 tracks focusing on Waller the performer from late 1935 through early 1942. (Only a few tracks are Waller compositions.) Most of the recording were made in New York, with a few from Los Angeles and Chicago, and three from London. (There are other albums with recordings from his European tours.) The transfers are generally very well done, and this is probably as good as you'll ever hear Waller sound. While I would have liked to hear more Waller compositions, this is a wonderful compilation of performances by one of the greatest of American musicians. These are performances I'll return to. If you like Waller or music of the era, don't hesitate to pick up this album.
