HISTORY OF DAMASCUS STEEL: From 300 BC to 1700 AD Damascus steel was the high quality steel used in blades and it was famous for making strong swords so well-forged that it could bent under pressure without breaking, yet held an edge so sharp it could cleave a big piece of wood in half with only the force behind one arm. During Middle Ages Damascus steel was used to make swords and the art of making Damascus steel was considered as a secret. Then a time came when process for making the original Damascus steel was lost. But it emerged again though modern day Damascus knives are not made in the same way as the medieval Damascus blades. The reasons for this are obvious, as no one knows exactly how those blades were made. I am always skeptical about lower priced damascus. That being said, I sanded the tang to remove the etch. I used ferric chloride to re-etch it and the pattern came back. If you're skeptical, don't trip. It's real. The one thing I dislike is the lack of choil/finger groove space between the blades edge and index finger. You're basically asking to slice your finger if used in any stressful way. Unless, you make an extended guard that falls off of the tang border edge. I personally, would never use this knife for that reason. The blade IS what it's advertised though, 5 stars.Pattern looks awesome. Pretty good sharpness out the box. Put a razor sharp edge on it with little effort. The blade itself looks nice and the metal is Damascus, but the piece I recieved had a decent twist warp in the blade, enough that when the handle is straight the cutting edge migrates from centerline at the base of the handle to being in line with the edge of the blank, works out to a 1/8" warp over 3" span, if blade was straight and true would give 5 starsThe steel looks really good no warpsbelle lame
