There, he and the cutlers’ union he formed produced the finest steel cutlery, finished with the now-famous proprietary edge preferred globally by professional and home cooks. In 1891, Karl supplied the Swiss Army with its standard issue Soldier’s Knife and in 1897 with the Officer’s Knife. In 1921, after the death of his mother, Victoria, and with the advent of stainless steel, then known as “inoxydable"" and used in the production of his cutlery, Karl changed the name of the company to Victorinox. It is from those humble beginnings that a worldwide icon was born. Today, Victorinox is still owned and operated by the Elsener family, and both the company and family still resides in the small village of Ibach, Switzerland. Care Tips for Swiss Army Knives The various tools are manufactured from high-quality steel with precisely tuned features that are essential for the particular application. The steel is tempered, annealed and polished to achieve the necessary hardness and provide optimum resistance to corrosion. Sharpening To re-sharpen your knife, use a whetstone at an angle of 15°– 20°. This will result in a cutting angle of 30°– 40°. If sharpening on a grinding wheel, always cool with plenty of water to avoid excessive temperatures and the resulting damages that may occur. Cleaning After you’ve used your Swiss Army Knife for all of its various applications, such as cutting open numerous boxes, you may notice that the blades begin to stick together. Opening and closing the blades in warm water several times will allow the tools to easily move again. Once they have dried, it is recommended, to apply a small drop of oil between the blade or tool shank and the spring. To optimally maintain the locking mechanism, periodically apply a drop of our recommended Swiss Army Knife Oil. Never put Swiss Army Knives in the dishwasher."

I used this model Swiss Army knife for the 10 years I was a 1st Assistant Photographer and celebrity portrait & rock 'n roll photographer based out of NYC. That knife travelled to 26 states with me; I used it on every photo shoot. Then I was hit by a car and lost my business. That Swiss Army knife is in retired in my camera bag that houses my favorite three Nikons.I bought myself a knew Swiss Army knife because I have nerve damage in my hands-- they're getting better (!), but I keep cutting my hands and fingers trying to hold scissors to open little packages, etc.I knew this Swiss Army knife would be much safer than using scissors or even a dull kitchen knife.I love that you get a large and small knife, PLUS, this little knife does so many things I wasnt aware of until my assistant pointed out that there's a cab opener. (I must say, I bought my old red Swiss Army knife almost 35 years ago; I don't recall it ever being this sharp, nor do I recall the can opener so obviously being a can opener. This lovely see through blue Swiss Army knife came in a box with instructions: the one I bought from Patagonia (extremely reputable store by Union Sq.) did not come with a box nor instructions. Most of the items on this knife are self explanatory, however I utilized the wire cutters, the can opener, and I'm not entirely sure what the sharp little thick almost crescent shape is meant for, but I used it often to un-jam my bosses and my own Hasselblad cameras. I also used the screw drivers often. If you work in a field where you need a knife and other tools that you can carry in your pocket or hang on a carabiner on your messenger or work bag, this is THE Swiss Army knife for you. This little knife saved so many photo shoots. Being a first assistant and a photographer with A list celebrities is a lot of pressure (especially when we used film).I would not have to my house without my Swiss Army knife.Turns out my assistant, who was Annie Leibovitz's First Assistant for two years several years earlier, carried the same Swiss Army knife all over the world with Annie.Looking for quality and durability?Look no farther. It's much safer using a sharp knife than a dull one. These are sharp, and when I was using it daily, I carried a small pumice stone to keep all of the blades sharpened.I never needed to oil this model.I can't believe these are still sold at such a reasonable price.I feel much safer opening my packages and small delivery boxes with this blade that locks in place, than I did when I used scissors. The blue is also such a beautiful translucent color.Highly recommended!
